Most career plans fail because they focus on titles instead of skills. A better approach is to work backwards from the role you want in five years and map out the specific skills, projects, and relationships that will get you there. In this article, we share a step-by-step framework we use with every client: (1) define your target role and the three skills it requires that you do not yet have, (2) identify the two projects inside your current job that could build those skills, (3) find one mentor and one peer in your target field, and (4) schedule a quarterly review to update the plan. We also cover how to handle pivots, promotions, and unexpected layoffs without abandoning the bigger picture.
